What makes a résumé work in 2026
Most résumés are read twice: once by parsing software that turns your document into structured fields, and once by a recruiter who spends roughly six to eight seconds deciding whether to keep reading. A résumé that wins both readings is boring to look at and specific to read — predictable section order, plain headings, and bullet points that carry numbers.
This builder enforces that structure for you. You supply the raw material — roles, dates, responsibilities, results — and the layout, hierarchy and export are handled so nothing gets lost between your screen and the recruiter's screening tool.
- One page for under ten years of experience, two pages above that
- Reverse-chronological order, most recent role first
- Three to five bullets per role, each starting with a verb
- Numbers wherever they exist: volume, budget, headcount, percentage, time saved
How the builder works
Upload an existing résumé in PDF or Word and the content is read out into editable fields — contact details, roles, education, skills. Nothing is retyped. If you don't have a file yet, you can type straight into the form or dictate the answers.
Next you tell us the role you're aiming at, either by pasting the job posting or by naming the job title. The wording of your summary and bullets is then aligned to that target before you export a PDF and, optionally, a cover letter that uses the same header and typography.
Sample: a support role bullet, rewritten
The most common weakness in a résumé is describing duties instead of outcomes. Here is the same job, written two ways.
Duty-based (weak)
- Responsible for handling customer support tickets
- Worked with the product team on recurring issues
- Helped onboard new team members
Outcome-based (strong)
- Resolved 60+ support tickets per week at a 96% CSAT across two time zones
- Flagged three recurring defects to product, cutting repeat tickets by 22% in one quarter
- Onboarded five new agents and wrote the internal macro library still in use
Same job, same person — only the evidence changed.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it really free?
- Yes. There is no account, no trial, no card and no watermark on the exported PDF. The tool is published by Briefly Recruiting and funded by the recruiting business behind it.
- Will my file be readable by applicant tracking systems?
- The export uses selectable text, standard section headings and a single-column body — the three things parsers need. There are no text boxes, tables or images placed behind your content.
- Do you keep my résumé?
- Your draft lives in the browser tab while you work and is cleared when you reload or press Start over.
