When a cover letter still changes the outcome
Plenty of applications never have their letter opened. It still matters in three situations: when you are changing industry and the CV alone looks like a mismatch, when there is a gap or an unusual move that needs one sentence of context, and when the employer is small enough that a human reads everything.
In those cases the letter is not a summary of your CV. It is the argument for why this particular jump makes sense, written in your own voice.
The four-paragraph structure that works
A letter that runs longer than one page loses. Keep it to four short paragraphs and roughly 250 words.
- Opening: the role, and the one reason you are writing — not 'I am writing to apply for'
- Proof: one achievement from your CV expanded with the context and the number
- Fit: what you know about this employer specifically, and where you would contribute first
- Close: availability, notice period, and a plain request for a conversation
