A résumé tool built around how applications are actually read

Most applications are not rejected because the candidate is weak. They are rejected because the document is hard to skim, because it answers a different question than the job posting asked, or because the file cannot be read cleanly by the software sitting between the applicant and the recruiter. This site exists to remove those three problems. It is run by Briefly Recruiting, a recruiting agency that spends its days reading applications, and the rules built into the tool are the ones we apply when we screen candidates for our own clients.

There are two things you can do here, and they work well together. You can build a new résumé from scratch or from a document you already have, and you can upload a finished résumé to have it graded and marked up. Neither requires an account, a subscription or a credit card, and neither keeps your document after you leave the page.

What the résumé score actually measures

A score is only useful if it points at something you can change. Rate My Résumé grades nine areas and weights them the way a first screen does: spelling and grammar and structure carry the most weight, followed by length, the relevance of your content and how much measurable impact your bullet points show. Readability, machine readability, layout and contact details make up the rest. A tidy single column or two column document is treated as perfectly professional; only genuinely awkward layouts, three or more columns, inconsistent typography and cluttered pages lose points.

Alongside the number you get the individual problems highlighted on your own document: typos, contradictory or impossible dates, paragraphs that are too dense to skim, and sections that a parser will struggle with. Each one comes with a suggested fix, so the report is a to-do list rather than a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Résumé Builder really free?

Yes. You can build a résumé, tailor it to a job posting, generate a matching cover letter and download both as PDF without paying and without creating an account.

Do I need to sign up or upload personal data?

No account is required. Your résumé content is processed to produce the document you asked for and is not stored on the site after you close the page, so reloading starts a fresh session.

How does the résumé score work?

Rate My Résumé reads your uploaded file and grades it on spelling and grammar, structure, length, content relevance, impact of your bullet points, readability, machine readability for applicant tracking systems, layout and contact details. You get a score out of 100, a breakdown per category and the specific problems marked on your document.

Will the résumé pass an applicant tracking system?

The exported PDF uses selectable text, standard section headings, consistent date formats and a clean single or two column layout, which is what parsing software needs. No tool can guarantee a specific system's behaviour, but these are the formatting rules that cause most parsing failures when they are broken.

Can I tailor one résumé to several different jobs?

Yes, and you should. Paste a job posting and the builder rewrites your summary and bullet points around what that posting actually asks for. Repeat with a different posting to produce a second version.

Which file types can I upload?

PDF and Word documents work. If your file is a scan or an image, the text cannot be read reliably, so type the content in instead.

Who runs this site, and why it is free

The site is published by Briefly Recruiting, a small recruiting practice run by Robert Dembinski from Hattingen in Germany.

There is no paid tier, no trial and nothing withheld behind an account, because the tool is not the business. Candidates who write a clearer document will find their dream jobs easier, and people who find the tool useful tend to remember who built it. The running costs are covered by Briefly Recruiting and, in part, by display advertising on the site. Ads never influence the score you receive or the wording the builder suggests, and nothing you type is shared with advertisers — the privacy policy explains exactly what is and is not collected.
